Sam Holmes Sailing is one of the most popular sailing channels on YouTube, with his channel receiving over 19 million views at the time of this writing. We recently sent Sam a few questions about his sailing adventures and he was kind enough to share his answers with us. Here are 10 questions with Sam Holmes Sailing from YouTube:
Q: What was life like before sailing full-time?
A: I worked a nine-to-five job in Los Angeles and sailed on the weekends and holidays.
Q: What brought you to sailing?
A: My parents sent me away to a sailing camp when I was about 16 and I really enjoyed it.
Q: What is your relationship like with sailing? Things you love/hate about sailing?
A: I like the independence of being powered by the wind and the places you can explore by sailboat. I hate squeezing into small uncomfortable places on the boat to fix things.
Q: Any advice for new or would-be sailors?
A: Keep the systems on your boat as simple as possible is my recommendation.
Q: Out of all the places you’ve sailed, what’s your favorite location?
A: Hawaii. Great climate, clear water, challenging sailing, lots of fish and coral and good hiking.
Q: How long do you plan to sail as a full-time endeavor?
A: For as long as its fun.
Q: Any hobbies outside of sailing?
A: Paragliding, piano, backpacking, sailplanes, making things.
Q: A convenience onboard that you can’t live without?
A: I’ve sailed a Hobie 16 to the Bahamas so there’s not much I cant live without onboard. Probably a warm jacket would be a must for me. I like my Gill sailing jacket they sent me.
Q: What do you know now that you’d wish you’d known sooner about sailing life?
A: It can be much more affordable than I thought and you can repair pretty much anything your self with a little creativity.
Q: Plans for the future?
A: Rough plan is Denmark, East coat of Sweden, Finland, Latvia, Germany, Netherlands, South coast of UK, France, across the bay of biscay to Spain, Portugal, into the Mediterranean then back across the Atlantic sometime around December to the Caribbean. Then possibility a refit or new boat in the US to take down to the South pacific. but I also want to do some more sailplane stuff before then.
